What do you love about fashion?

Reinvention. Taking great old ideas and processes and revisiting them with new technology.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Colorful. Basic. Denim.

What is your dream job?

I dream of starting my own denim business that provides custom ﬁtting jeans. I see longevity and functionality as essential traits of both good design and ethical business. If customers wear my products for a substantial amount of time this reduces waste. People don’t wear things that don’t ﬁt. For me at least, the better a piece ﬁts, the more I want to wear it.

What are you inspired by right now?

Peace, serenity, authenticity, and quality. Also the sun and vintage European motorcycles.

What is your favorite place to buy fabric?

“Pendleton Woolen Mills!” (he said, shamelessly). I would actually say Paron Fabrics in NYC. I just love going in there and feeling all the wonderful wools.

Favorite Class at Cornell Thus Far?

Introduction to Massage. Any massage is a good massage!

Favorite Spring 2011 Collection?

Burberry Prorsum has been amazing me lately. There is just so much going on. Also Shipley and Halmos.

Favorite off campus restaurant?

Just A Taste. If you have not been there, please stop what you are doing and go right now. It isamazing!

The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins

What are you loving right now in your closet?

My ﬂuffy loose knit sweater from Loft, Design by… and light wash Pepe Jeans. I am ready for spring and they are just the thing for a picnic!

What is your current state of mind?

Expanding.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

People + Time.

What is your greatest fear?

Failure. Not living up to my own goals and ideals.

Which historical ﬁgure do you most identify with?

This is a tough one…I’ve always identiﬁed with Teddy Roosevelt and love his quotes but I think I would have to say Robert A. Heinlein. He looks at the future with both wonder and trepidation of that which humans are capable. His stories are also a fun read.

Which living person do you most admire?

Matt Dillahunty.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself ?

How easily I am distracted. I could see this as profound wonder of the world but it’s frustrating when I need to get things accomplished.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

It’s a toss up between being full of themselves and the basic failure to think, be it about life, humanity, or what exactly it is that we know about the world.

What is it that you most dislike?

Dogma and fanaticism.

What is your greatest extravagance?

I would love to say “I huge bed!” but right now it is raw denim.

What do you most value in your friends?

The ability to have fun no matter the situation.

What is your favorite journey?

Longboarding to the Plantations!

What is your most treasured possession?

My Saddleback Leather briefcase. I don’t know how my life would work without it.

When and where were you happiest?

Oh wow…hmm… Can’t talk about that right now.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Increase my drive to create and do.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I would place last year’s Pendleton collection high on my list. I look at the jumpsuit and get a
wonderful warm fuzzy feeling!

If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?

I would make them a tad more fashionable. That way they would be fashionable at all.

If you died and came back as a person or thing what do you think it would be?

Human leather? I think that is the only product I would want to be made into. Reincarnation-wise? That’s silly, but perhaps a dog.

What is your most marked characteristic?

Cheerfulness!

Who is your favorite hero of ﬁction?

Jigsaw. I’ve always been more interested in villains than heros. Heros are often not complex enough. I don’t want to see black and white. I want humanity. I want mixed emotions and tough decisions between conﬂicting interests, both good and bad. If I had to pick though, I would say Spiderman.

What is your motto?

Quality in all things.

Chill. I had a great night’s sleep, it’s been a while since I’ve said that.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being home surrounded by the people and things I love.

What is your greatest fear?

To be unsatisfied with my life.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Frida Kahlo.

Which living person do you most admire?

My mother. She’s a godsend.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Sometimes I don’t care enough. It used to be the opposite, but I think I could afford to take things a little more seriously sometimes.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Perfectionism. I don’t think anything is that serious. People would be a lot happier if they learned to laugh about things every now and then.

What is it that you most dislike?

Allergies. I’d be much happier without them.

What is your greatest extravagance?

My Barbie bag. It’s definitely not something that I necessarily needed, but once I saw it I knew I had to have it.

What do you most value in your friends?

That they’ve become like family so soon. I don’t know what I’d do without them.

What is your favorite journey?

Road trips. Especially the long ones through the desert. I’ve taken the trip from Texas to California a couple times, and each trip is more magical than the other. Waking up to a desert sunrise while listening to The Eagles’ ‘Tequila Sunrise’ is something that just feels right.

What is your most treasured possession?

My quinceñera dress. It’s one of the last things my grandma bought me and it reminds me of good times.

When and where were you happiest?

The fall of my sophomore year of high school. The relationship between my two best friends and I grew really strong that October. I miss that feeling.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Getting into Cornell. It’s cliché, but It was definitely a defining moment in my life.

If you died and came back as a person or thing what do you think it would be?

A dragonfly, many times. They have such short lives, but I’d love to imagine what I’d do in that one day of life.

My humor. I’ve always wanted to be a comedian. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who thinks I’m funny.

Forrest Gump. He’s a genius.

The people, the color, the patterns, the hidden details, the constant recycling and adapting…everything basically!

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Colorful, printed and youthful.

What is your dream job?

A creative job with the possibility for travel and a collaborative work environment! That’s not very specific, but those are the things I’d choose over anything.

What are you inspired by right now?

SO MUCH. i’ve been thinking a lot about New Order, Louise Bourgeois, Laurie Anderson, and a photography exhibit I saw at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when I was home. And, as always, I love Talk To Her-thinking a lot about those dance costumes at the beginning!

What is your favorite place to buy fabric?

It sounds so pretentious to say “India”-but it’s true! The Pochampally Handloom Park has the most beautiful ikats I’ve ever seen-I could have lived there!

What do you love about fashion?

Fashion is one of the most dynamic industries, as it requires managers to be constantly aware of the changing conditions of the market. This includes following trends, studying consumer shopping behaviors, developing better strategies for managing supply chains, and understanding how to market innovation and manage creativity. Fashion is never boring because it is constantly evolving.

Your dream job?

My dream job is to manage a luxury fashion company with a global presence.

Are you going abroad/thinking about it?

I am currently studying abroad in Milan, the fashion and business capital of Italy.

What are you inspired by right now?

Recently, I have been very inspired by my travels in Italy. I was in Rome last weekend and all of the layers of history in the city completely blew me away; I have a newfound obsession with white marble anything. To counterbalance my culture shock, I recently watched “American Beauty” to return to that Americana familiarity of suburbia. I love Mena Suvari’s deep fear of being boring.

Favorite class at Cornell thus far?

Besides all of my great fashion classes, I really enjoyed taking my freshman writing seminar on semiotics.

Are you a fan of The Bieber?

His music is way too catchy for this to be a fair question, but that hair… his poor neck is going to break if he keeps flipping his bangs to the side.

Favorite fashion movie?

“Zoolander” would be the hilarious option; “Coco avant Chanel” would be more serious. And the scene in “Gone with the Wind”, although technically not a fashion-themed movie, where Scarlett O’Hara walks down the stairs in the gown made of curtains - fantastic moment for fashion.

What do you love about fashion?

I love that there are no rules, if you want to wear something, you can. You can have so much fun experimenting with fashion.

Your dream job?

My dream job would be working as a stylist for Elle Magazine. I’m also interested in the communications track and working for a fashion magazine as a journalist.

Are you going abroad/thinking about it?

I would love to study abroad in France my junior year and absolutely plan on it. My mom is a French teacher so she has already picked out the place I’ll be staying!

Favorite class at Cornell thus far?

My freshman writing seminar last semester was called Pop Psyche. We had no textbooks and our assignment each night was to watch certain episodes of Sex and the City and take notes on them. For the entire class we would discuss the characters and all of the essays involved an analysis of the show and its characters. It was fantastic!

Are you a fan of The Bieber?

I might have downloaded his entire album onto my Ipod.

Favorite fashion movie?

The September Issue, because Anna Wintour is the most intense person I’ve ever seen.

What are you loving right now in your closet?

My Hunter rainboots aren’t necessarily my favorite but considering the weather in Ithaca, they’re fantastic. In the course of one day it can go from snowing to raining to hailing to sunshine and with those boots I can walk through anything!

What do you love about fashion?

I love how its connected to all parts of our world. Its such a powerful force of art, innovation, and influence, yet so few people really understand that. There are so many opportunities to use fashion and design as a means of artistic expression, a way to communicate new ideas, and a vehicle for change. I find the role of dress in different cultures fascinating, as well as its relationship to the socioeconomic and political state of the time.

Your dream job?

I really don’t know. Maybe art director of a significant fashion magazine? I’ve been trying to find something that combines my interests in design, art, writing, and fashion as completely as possible. I think I’d be happy just being in the industry, though, as long as my job provides me with some sort of creative freedom, whether that is in designing clothes or developing marketing concepts.

Are you going abroad/thinking about it?

LONDON! hopefully….I’m somewhat of an Anglophile….and I’m kind of obsessed with british accents.

What are you inspired by right now?

Musically I’m liking The XX, Arcade Fire, The Drums, and British Sea Power. Right now I’ve been very inspired by a sort of ethereal vibe with soft, light textures, knits, and lots of layering.

Favorite class at Cornell thus far?

Visual Communications, I’m currently taking it and it’s really interesting. It discusses the analysis of images based on advertising techniques and means of persuasion.

Are you a fan of The Bieber?

Sorry, I just don’t get it!!! AT ALL! He looks like he’s twelve.

Favorite fashion movie?

The September Issue was really interesting. I think I prefer movies that aren’t literally fashion movies, but are stillbeautiful and inspiring: The Royal Tenenbaums, Atonement, Marie Antoinette, The Talented Mr Ripley, Factory Girl.

Favorite Fall 2011 collection?

I really liked Oscar de la Renta, Milly, and Wes Gordon. I also absolutely loved the knits and layering in the first half of Nanette Lepore’s collection, but I was totally confused by prints of the second half.

What are you loving right now in your closet?

Right now I’m really obsessed with these great black ankle boots I got from….Payless. Yes, Payless. The black suede is layered in several different, interesting textures, finished with gold buckles, and a thick gold platform heel. I call them my Lady Gaga Boots, and I’ve been wearing them basically every weekend for the past month. They’re perfect for going out in this weather, cause they keep my feet warm but they still make me 5 inches taller! Also they’re just awesome.

What do you love about fashion?

I love how it’s constantly changing- everything season is a reaction to the past. I love trying to predict trends and observing street styles. I also am really interested in period dress; it is definitely a major inspiration for my personal style

Your dream job?

I would ideally like to work for a publication as a stylist, or as a merchandiser for a luxury brand.

Are you going abroad/thinking about it?

I plan to go to Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute next Spring. I would like to take design and merchandising courses there. I am also currently studying Chinese, which I hope to continue there.

What are you inspired by right now?

I love electronic music; I have been listening to The xx and Crystal Castles a lot the last few weeks. I also love Hot Chip, Ratatat, Miike Snow. Most of my favorite movies are either by Quentin Tarantino or Tim Burton. I especially love Pulp Fiction, and can’t wait for Kill Bill Vol. 3 to be released! I also love Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. Colleen Atwood’s costume design work in Tim Burton’s films has been very inspirational to my personal style as well.

Favorite class at Cornell thus far?

I loved Professor Breen’s Apparel Production/Management class. We learned so much practical information about the apparel industry that will definitely be useful for many potential careers. I also loved Renaissance & Baroque Art History.

Are you a fan of The Bieber?

Haha, not really.

Favorite Fall 2011 collection?

I love Alberta Ferretti, so far. I am usually not a fan of so much color, but I love the deep burgundies and teals together. And I think the velvet thigh-high boots are fabulous!

What are you loving right now in your closet?

I’m loving my longer dresses and skirts. I just bought a black leather, 50s style, full skirt that is my current favorite.

What are some of your interests/hobbies?

Aside from [architecture] I am very interested in politics, especially international politics such as foreign policy. In my free time, I like to snowboard, play tennis, and run. I run, given the time, 6 miles a day. It keeps me sane, especially with architecture.

Are you interested in fashion? If so, how?

Yes. In fact, in middle school and early in high school, I thought it would be what I studied in college. I took classes at Parsons and FIT, and was even featured in an article Teen Vogue in November 2006. I have changed a lot since then.

How would you describe your personal style?

Style is very difficult to define. My style is constantly changing—it is relative to everything I see and everything I like. I guess if I had to define my style it would be somewhere between preppy, classic, and modern. When I get dressed in the morning, I try to think of how an Italian man would dress. I try to show my personality—sometimes that means salmon pants.

Have you ever modeled or considered modeling in the past?

I have modeled in the past. It is not something I like to discuss, but it is definitely something that has affected my perspective on life.

What other clubs or organizations are you involved with on campus?

I am my architecture class’s representative, I am currently rushing Alpha Kappa Psi, and I will join AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) this week.

What is your favorite off-campus restaurant?

I love Pita Pit. It reminds me of home. In high school, my mom and I would order pita all the time. It reminds me of her.

Where are you from?

I have a California license, but I am registered to vote in New York. I’m not just from one place. My mom lives in New York on the Upper East Side, and my Dad lives in Venice, California right next to the ocean. I am truly bicoastal.

How do you like to spend your spare time?

As an architecture student, sleep is something I always lack. Other than that, I love to travel. I am going to Rome this summer for five weeks with Cornell to study art. I’m also a foodie. I love to eat. I have no relation to Alice Waters, but I like to think I do.

Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?

My mom gave me a very beautiful watch for high school graduation. I wear it all the time. It reminds of what I have accomplished, and how far I still have to go. I also bought a jacket in Lucca, Italy last summer—its navy blue/charcoal, modern military style with breast pockets. I wear it practically every day in the spring and fall.

What is your favorite place to shop/clothing brand?

I like J. Lindeberg, Lacoste, and Theory. Clean and modern. I like clothes that fit well and are beautiful.

Favorite book/ currently reading?

Just finished Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Really conceptual and interesting.

Favorite movie/last movie seen?

Black Swan. Amazing and inspiring… One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

What are you currently listening to? What are the top 5 most listened to songs on your ipod?

I don’t know what I would do without Coldplay: Yellow, Politik, Swallowed In the Sea, The Scientist, and Don’t Panic have gotten me through those rough patches. Also, ever since I saw David Guetta five years ago in Marseilles, I haven’t stopped listening to electronic/dance music.

What are some of your interests/hobbies?

[I’m] very interested in travel and international development. Hopefully one day I can help developing countries organize more effective institutions of democracy i.e. constitutions, voting systems.

Are you interested in fashion? If so, how?

Sometimes I feel that saying I am interested in fashion means I am interested in materialism, but observing fashion from a student’s angle,(such as you guys) I have learned that fashion can be used as a means of artistic expression and empowerment of people in lower income groups by using materials that are cheaper and more sustainable.

How would you describe your personal style?

Personally I would say I have no style because I have grown up following the trends around me. In my early days of High School I was a bright t-shirt/Air Jordan wearing sneaker head, and then I developed a more relaxed style of jeans and simple color tee shirts. At Cornell it seems that what qualifies style is the fact that I am deliberating this question in the first place.

Have you ever modeled or considered modeling in the past?

Never considered modeling in the past, was asked by a friend to take photos for his online collection of scarves for his clothing line Native X, and that is what influenced me to do Pendleton Scholarship.

What other clubs or organizations are you involved with on campus?

What is your favorite off-campus restaurant?

I like Café Dewitt for brunch, Zaza’s is great for dinner.

Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan.

How do you like to spend your downtime

Finding new music, swimming.

Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?

My jeans (Nom De Guerre, Acne, APC) and thanks to Ithaca, my huge North Face jacket that makes me feel like a bomb squad member from The Hurt Locker.

What is your favorite place to shop/clothing brand?

I hate to shop, I grew up in Soho so I learned distaste for large shopping bags and strolls of tourists mobbing on from store to store. If I had to, I’d recommend Club Monaco for some button downs (kind of like J.Crew a bit nicer material I think), small men’s boutique stores are fun to look at and talk to the people who care about the collection and ambience of their store, but too expensive. The vintage store Petrune in the commons is a lot of fun to go to with friends and you’ll probably find a sick deal on something (A 1954 Alumni blazer).

Favorite book/ currently reading?

Currently reading Huruki Murakami’s, “Kafka on the Shore,” I highly recommend it, and big fan of “Picture of Dorian Grey.”

Favorite movie/last movie seen?

Spark of Being at Cornell Cinema with live music from Keystone was that last movie and I found it pretty genius. Magnolia by P.T. Anderson is definitely one to check out.

I love playing basketball.

Somewhat, I like to see everybody’s different styles.

How would you describe your personal style?

I would describe my style as casual and laid back. I wear what feels comfortable, whether it be sweats or jeans and a sweater. It really depends on what I feel like that day. Being here in Ithaca, it sometimes depends on the weather haha.

Have you ever modeled or considered modeling in the past?

Modeling is a totally new experience for me. It has crossed my mind in the past, but I never thought I would actually be doing it.

What other clubs or organizations are you involved with on campus?

I play on the basketball team here at Cornell, so that takes up most of my time.

I’m originally from Durham, NC but have lived in Nashville, TN since I was five.

Usually listening to music or reading if I have time.

When I’m not catching up on sleep I like to hang out with friends and watch TV or I’ll read a book. Going outside as much as possible is a must.

This blue sweater I have has to be the most comfortable thing in the world.
